A member of staff’s story

I joined Friars Mead just over 13 years ago, at the age of 18, having seen a recruitment advertisement in the local paper.

I was made to feel very welcome at my interview by the Manager and I was delighted to hear that my interview had been successful.

I was quiet nervous on taking up my position as a Care Assistant as this was my first full time job on leaving college. It took me a couple of months to settle in and learn the day to day routine but once the initial probationary period was over I became more confident and relaxed in my new role and I am as happy here now at the age of 24 as I was six years ago.

Getting to know each Resident personally has helped me to develop my interpersonal skills and I am now as comfortable with each resident as I hope they are with me.  All of the residents know that they can always come and talk to me whether it is to share a problem or a concern or just to have a chat and a laugh.

Caring, for me, has been a wonderful opportunity to get to know people from a different generation, it has broadened my horizons and taught me new values. I’ve learnt to be more understanding and considerate and have gained a lot more patience.

As a valued member of the Care team (that is how I am made to feel!) I was given the role of Events and Outings Organiser.

Each year I am given a budget to enable me to finance in-house entertainment and outings for the residents’ enjoyment. I also organise fund raising events, such as the Summer and Christmas fetes. All of the proceeds are added to my budget so that it is all used for the direct benefit of our Residents.

I am fortunate enough to have great support from my colleagues on such occasions for they give up their spare time and expertise to help.  Our cook always prepares home made goodies for our fetes, and packed lunches for our days out and good they are too!  These events have proved extremely successful and enjoyable for all concerned.

I am glad I chose a career in Caring as it is so enjoyable, I’m also very fortunate to have found such a perfect place as Friars Mead and I hope to remain here for many years to come.
